TWO “local heroes” were presented with community achievement awards at the Christmas lights switch-on in Brampton.

Brampton residents Stanley Walton and Lorraine Naylor were one of the highlights of the night at Brampton Community Centre on December 2, which was attended by about 300 people, including fire eaters and stilt walkers.

The duo were presented with their awards by Wentworth and Dearne MP John Healey, who praised them for their dedicated service to the community.

Stanley, of Becknoll Road, has volunteered for over 30 years in local schools and at the community centre.

During this time he has organised the senior citizens’ group.

Stanley has also helped to transport members of the group to the venue who otherwise would not be able to attend.

Meanwhile, Lorraine, who lives on Knollbeck Crescent, has been just as important to her local community.

She runs the lunch club at the community centre, which has proved popular with elderly residents, and regularly helps at events and classes.

Both are on the centre’s management committee.

Mr Healey said: “Stanley and Lorraine are true community heroes.

“The community centre is a place where people in Brampton can meet up and learn new skills.

“Without Stanley and Lorraine, and all the other volunteers, many local people, especially older people, just wouldn’t have been able to take part in the activities the centre offers.

“They’ve never asked for recognition for their many years of hard work.

“But it’s right that they receive these community achievement awards and I am pleased to present them.”
